Portrait Zero is an interconnected photography project that explores human connection through a simple yet profound rule:
Each portrait only exists because of the one that follows it.
How it works
The project begins with a single sitter, the Portrait Zero.
But here’s the twist: before I can photograph them, they must first select the next person in the chain. For ease of explanation, let’s call them “Portrait One”.
Portrait One must confirm their participation before Portrait Zero session can proceed. Once all is locked in and confirmed, I can photograph Portrait Zero.
But the chain doesn’t stop there. Before Portrait One can have their session, they must select Portrait Two, who must confirm their participation. Only then can Portrait One be photographed. Portrait Two must select Portrait Three before their session, and so the chain continues—each link dependent on the next.
The rules are simple
- You choose who comes after you
- Their yes unlocks your portrait session
- The chain continues indefinitely
- Every portrait depends on the next
Multiple streams, infinite connections
Portrait Zero isn’t just one stream; it will be many, each tapping into a different community. Each stream has specific guidelines to ensure the chains reach beyond immediate circles:
